Peggy Jereb Takes Reins as WSRT
President at Annual Conference
The Wyoming Society of
Radiologic Technologists held their 44th Annual Conference and
Business Meeting, September 20 – 23, 2001 in Cheyenne. In the wake
of the very recent terrorist attacks on the East Coast on September
11, the meeting went off well despite several speakers being unable
to attend and last minute changes that were necessarily made by
Lesli Troastle, Conference Chair.
Allen Terrell, President of the ASRT,
expressed his deep regret that scheduling changes due to the
tragedies prevented his attendance at our conference as keynote
speaker. However, in response to our plea for help, the ASRT sent
Becky Kruse and Joan Parsons from Albuquerque to not only attend the
conference, but also participate as speakers. We express our
heartfelt thanks to them.
Barb Ossias of Nycomed was also unable to
attend, but made arrangements to give her presentation via
conference call with the assistance of Joe Murray. Rosanne Paschal
of the ARRT was unfortunately unable to attend the conference.
The conference was well attended with
over 80 participants from all over the state of Wyoming as well as
Colorado and Nebraska registered over the three-day event. Our good
friend Danny Gonzales from the New Mexico affiliate brought his wife
Gwen and was not only a speaker but attended the conference all
three days. We were also fortunate to have Lianna Watson and Dan
Gilbert from Nebraska, as well as Jack Barr and Betty Schans from
Colorado give presentations. Of course, we had several local
speakers participate as well including Steve DeBella, Dr. Ariz, Dr.
Beer and Linda Holden who filled in as a great keynote speaker in
place of Allen Terrell. And, as always, many thanks to all of our
sponsors.
Peggy Jereb from Casper was installed as
President of the WSRT for the next year. Peggy has been very
involved with the WSRT for a number of years as a board member and a
member of several committees as well as actively involved with the
ASRT. Kristy Nystrom, also from Casper and actively involved with
both the WSRT and ASRT was installed as President-Elect. Ruby Self
from Laramie is the new Vice President and Cheryl Peterson will
continue into her second term as Treasurer. Mike Lewis continues as
Editor.
An LCCC student was elected as an officer
this coming year as the WSRT Secretary. Dorothy (Dottie) Whalen, a
second-year student, is the first student to be elected to serve on
the Board, and was installed at the Awards Banquet. Although
students have been allowed to vote and serve as Secretary or
Treasurer of the WSRT according to the WSRT bylaws, this is the
first time a student has ever reached this level of professional
recognition.
It was suggested and a consensus was
granted by the membership to make the position of Secretary a
two-year position with the election of that position being opposite
of the Treasurer. It was felt that with the elimination of the
Executive Secretary position last year, this would bring a bit more
continuity for the WSRT with the duties that each of these people
perform.

found at the WSRT web site.
ASRT TO WAIVE DUES OF
DEPLOYED MILITARY MEMBERS
The ASRT Board of Directors
has voted to waive the membership renewal dues of any ASRT member
deployed for U.S. military service after Sept. 11, 2001, as part of
Operation Enduring Freedom. The waiver applies to R.T.s who are
deployed by the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force or Marine Corps.
It also applies to ASRT members who are activated by the Reserves or
the National Guard.
"Hundreds of ASRT members are active-duty
members of the military or serve as reservists or members of
National Guard units," said ASRT Board Chairman Michael DelVecchio,
B.S., R.T.(R). "Should any of them be called upon to serve as part
of Operation Enduring Freedom, they will not have to pay their ASRT
membership dues for the duration of their deployment."
Mr. DelVecchio said the dues waiver is designed
to offer additional support to military R.T.s who are called
overseas or called to active duty. "Although small, it will be one
less thing for these R.T.s to worry about," he said.
To qualify for the dues waiver, the
radiologic technologist must have been an ASRT member as of Sept.
11, 2001, and must be deployed for military service after Sept. 11,
2001. When members who meet these criteria receive their next dues
renewal notice from ASRT, they should return it to ASRT with a copy
of their deployment orders. The ASRT then will waive the member's
dues for the following year. The dues waiver applies only to
renewals of membership, not to new ASRT memberships.
SROA
SELECTS ASRT TO MANAGE ITS DAILY OPERATIONS
(SAN FRANCISCO, NOV. 4,
2001) - At its annual meeting here today, the Society for Radiation
Oncology Administrators announced that it has selected the American
Society of Radiologic Technologists, based in Albuquerque, N.M., to
manage its business operations.
SROA President John Felton said the ASRT
will handle SROA's day-to-day administrative details, such as
maintaining the member database, processing member dues and tracking
CE credits for SROA members. "This will free the SROA Board of
Directors and committees to concentrate on more long-term, strategic
issues," said Mr. Felton, who is president and chief executive
officer of Northern Rockies Cancer Center in Billings, Mont.
Founded in 1983, the SROA represents more
than 500 members active in radiation oncology management. The
association promotes the field of radiation oncology administration
and provides its members with professional development opportunities
and educational programs.
Mr. Felton said the SROA Board of Directors
carefully reviewed ASRT's mission, capabilities, structure and
resources before selecting it to provide management services to SROA.
"The SROA issued a request for proposals, and several companies
expressed interest in providing our management services," said Mr.
Felton. "We chose ASRT because we were impressed by its commitment
to knowledge management and quality improvement, as well as by the
background and experience of its staff members. We also feel that
ASRT's focus on developing the radiologic science work force is
compatible with SROA's mission to provide proactive solutions for
cancer care delivery."
Mr. Felton emphasized that the SROA and the
ASRT will remain separate, autonomous organizations. "The SROA will
continue to be guided by its own Board of Directors, committees and
members, as will the ASRT. The two organizations might collaborate
on projects where there is a mutual interest, as they always have,
but for the most part they will function independently of one
another."
Under the three-year management
agreement, which begins Jan. 1, 2002, ASRT will provide:
· Membership services, including maintaining the SROA member
database and Web site, distributing the quarterly SROA newsletter,
and responding to all member inquiries.
· Financial management services, including processing member dues,
managing SROA bank accounts, preparing quarterly financial
statements and assisting the SROA treasurer with budget preparation.
· Meeting and conference planning services, including preparing and
distributing meeting brochures, working with convention center and
hotel personnel, and handling registration for the SROA annual
conference.
The ASRT is excited by this
opportunity to help the SROA fulfill its strategic objectives," said
ASRT Chief Executive Officer Lynn May. "Our goal is to be
service-oriented and member-focused. We have credentialed employees
working in every department, from degreed accounting staff to
Microsoft-certified database administrators. Our staff will provide
SROA members with quality customer service and exceed their
expectations for responsiveness, accuracy and efficiency."
The ASRT, which represents more than 92,000
members, is the world's oldest and largest association for
radiologic technologists. The SROA is the only external association
managed by the ASRT, although Mr. May said the society is
considering offering its management services to
other radiologic science organizations.
The SROA previously was managed by the
Radiological Society of North America, based in Chicago. Mr. May
said the ASRT is working with RSNA representatives to ensure a
smooth transfer of SROA's electronic data as well as paper files.
"The transition should appear seamless to SROA members," he said.
Effective Jan. 1, the new SROA mailing
address will be P.O. Box 51687, Albuquerque, NM 87181-1687, and the
toll-free telephone number will be 866-458-7762. The SROA Web site
will remain at www.sroa.org

From the WSRT President
It's been a busy time since the Annual
Conference in Cheyenne. The Conference was great, seeing old
friends, making new friends and learning new tricks in the process.
The speakers were all very well prepared and I, for one, learned
many new things. You actually can teach an old dog new tricks. Lesli
did a great job in setting up the conference. Well-done Lesli.
The Legislative Committee met Oct 12th in
Wheatland to begin the process of amending our Licensure law. The
hard work is just beginning but we will continue until we get it
done. This is a budget session and we may not get it introduced, but
we will be prepared for the next session. We will count on all the
support and help we can get to accomplish this task. More
information will be coming as we get it.
I am very excited to be attending the
Leadership Academy in Albuquerque in January with Linda Holden and
Kelly Hartigan. I hope to learn many things to bring back to the
WSRT and will strive to fill my position to the best I can do. I
encourage anyone who is considering running for a board position to
apply to attend.
My thanks go out to Victor White, the PR
committee chair. He has prepared an Email campaign and editorial
letters for the newspapers for NRTW. Thanks Victor for all your hard
work. Great job.
The WSRT is still accepting nominations
until April for all board offices. Get involved and run for an
office. It is pretty painless and you will greatly benefit from the
experience. Let's see some more nominations. Contact Ruby Self in
Laramie to submit your nominees.
If any one has any concerns or ideas for
the Society please feel free to contact me. I love to chat to any
one who will listen to me and I will always listen to anyone who may
have comments. My address is on the WSRT web site.
Until next time,
Peggy Jereb
Legislative Committee
The legislative committee,
comprised of members Starla Mason, Shelley Breazeale, Leonard
Geringer, Mike Lewis and chaired by Kelly Hartigan met in Wheatland
October 16 to discuss upcoming legislation concerning the Wyoming
Radiologic Technologist Licensing Act. Due to a communication mix
up, WSRT President Peggy Jereb and WBRTE President Kristy Nystrom
were not present.
The WSRT is putting together new licensing
requirements to be introduced as a new bill to the Wyoming
Legislature to better meet the needs of the Wyoming Board of
Radiologic Technologist Examiners, as well as hopefully address the
concerns about the licensing of technicians and the issue of those
persons running DEXA scanning equipment. The committee seems to have
reached a consensus and is hopeful that the bill will be ready very
soon.
WBRTE News
The WBRTE is currently
reviewing and rewriting its state statutes. The purpose is to update
the statutes to reflect current practices. Once the board approves
the changes, we will be sending our bill to the legislature. After
approval of any statute changes, the Rules and Regulations will be
changed accordingly.
The board has an opening for a public member. Anyone who is
interested please contact Nannette Brown for an application. This
applicant can be any member of the general public. Any questions
about the requirements can be directed to me. I can be reached via
e-mail through the WSRT Web Site. Our next meeting is slated for
November.
Kristy Nysrtom R.T.(R)(M)(QM)
President WBRTE
WSRT Web Site
Changes continue to be made to the WSRT web site with the focus
primarily in updated information, as it is available. The
information about the new board members has been updated and their
e-mail should be distributed to them. Please let me know of any
problems.
The proposed changes for the bylaws as well as the Policies and
Procedures are on-line and will be updated as the board and members
make recommendations. Please review them at your convenience.
The WSRT Forum/Chat Area has pretty much been a flop so far,
although several people from the ASRT have stopped by to say hi. I
have created a forum for the ASRT’s Committee on Chapters, which is
a sub-committee for the Task Force on Governance Restructuring. When this committee finishes its
task, it will be dissolved and I will convert the new software to
the WSRT’s forum. It has a whole different look and feel to it and I
hope it will be more successful. For an example of the new forum,
take a look at another similar forum at
http://home.gowyo.com/forum/.
Nominations

Casper College News….
The Casper College Student Radiography Association would like to
thank everyone at the conference for supporting their 50/50 raffle.
Paul Trowbridge, who won the raffle, donated the money back to the
students. Thank you Paul for being so generous and such a great
asset to our profession!!!
LCCC News...
The following 2001 graduates
of the LCCC Radiography Program have passed their national
certification examination administered by the American Registry of
Radiologic Technologists (ARRT): Leonard Geringer, Carey Kreiling,
Dave Lupton, Willeena (Billie) Opdyke, Kristin Pitts, Jamie Wiggam,
Wendy Wieland, and Sharon Young.
This is the eleventh consecutive year that
LCCC's graduates have passed on this first attempt, maintaining a
100% passage rate on this exam. ARRT certification allows graduates
to be employed anywhere in the United States, and automatically
satisfies the licensing requirements in nearly all states with
licensure.
These graduates received their A.A.S. in
May, and their program completion certificates in mid-July. All of
them are employed full-time in radiography; the majority of them are
employed in southeast Wyoming, the rest are employed in Nebraska,
Colorado, and Texas.

Escobedo Award of Excellence
This year’s recipient of the
Escobedo Award for Excellence is Peggy Jereb. Peggy has been a
dedicated member of the WSRT as well as the ASRT, serving on the
board of the WSRT, plus many committees at both the affiliate and
national levels. We are all very proud of her!
The Escobedo Award is given by the WSRT in
recognition of a member’s outstanding service and support to the
society.
SPEAKER OF ASRT HOUSE OF
DELEGATES RESIGNS
The speaker of the ASRT
House of Delegates has resigned his position, citing personal
reasons for his decision. Scott S. Tulane, B.S.R.S., R.T.(R)(CT),
submitted a letter of resignation to the ASRT Board of Directors on
Oct. 20.
“Being elected and serving as Speaker of
the House of Delegates has been one of the greatest honors that I
have ever experienced," Mr. Tulane wrote in his letter of
resignation. "I deeply regret that I am unable to complete my term
of office."
Mr. Tulane, who lives in Electra, Texas,
was first elected to an ASRT office in 1999, when he was chosen as
vice speaker of the House of Delegates. He was re-elected as vice
speaker in 2000 and named speaker of the House in 2001.
The 234-member House of Delegates is ASRT's
legislative and governing body. Delegates choose a speaker and vice
speaker at their annual meeting every June. The two officials are
responsible for overseeing all House business. They also serve as
members of the ASRT Board of Directors.
In his letter of resignation, Mr. Tulane
thanked the delegates for their support. "I have been privileged to
work with so many talented and dedicated delegates, who have taught
me a great deal about professionalism," he said.
Mr. Tulane's duties will be transferred to
House Vice Speaker Richard Fucillo, R.T.(R), FASRT, a resident of
Las Vegas, Nev., who immediately becomes speaker of the House. "I am
confident that Richard Fucillo will execute the duties of speaker
with great distinction," said Mr. Tulane.
At the 2002 session of the House of
Delegates in Birmingham, Ala., delegates will elect a vice speaker
pro tem to help preside over the first meeting of the House on June
9. At the second meeting of the House on June 12, the delegates will
elect a speaker and vice speaker who each will serve a one-year term
on the ASRT Board of Directors during 2002-2003.
